IN/OUT takes the entrance area of the 907 Theatre as its primary stage, centering on six interconnected doors as the core imagery of the work. These doors are no longer merely pathways for movement; instead, they symbolize the many moments of opening and closing that occur throughout life. As dancers move through these thresholds, the neutral space transforms into a layered field carrying memories and choices. Through the body’s movement between doorframes, light, and air, audiences witness emotions being awakened and memories being reflected. Using the body as its primary narrative thread, the work builds a sensory viewing experience through footsteps, movement trajectories, and shifting light within space. The audience is no longer waiting for a performance to begin they are placed directly inside the unfolding landscape of the piece.
The work focuses on the themes of absence and loss in life. Accumulation and missed opportunities often coexist; unspoken words, fleeting moments that slipped away, and choices that can never be revisited all leave traces within memory and the body. Through the dancers’ actions, these traces become visible allowing absence to be seen and loss to be heard.
The decision to present the work within an “in-between” space reflects the transitional states people frequently inhabit in life the waiting, hesitation, and pause before the next decision arrives. Through the opening and closing of doors, movement, and moments of suspension, the work reveals the layered progression of time and memory.
Ultimately, the piece points toward acceptance of the past. Dialogue of Absence and Loss allows past and present to coexist within the same space, inviting audiences to listen to their own experiences of absence and loss while standing in the threshold between inside and outside.
